Follow the machinery.

Eight ways to inspect a mechanism, change an assumption and follow the result into the lessons.

Actual atlas interface captures, edited with pauses for reading and the original atlas score. Pause whenever you want to inspect a screen.

The score is instrumental. This descriptive transcript carries the walkthrough’s learning points; each experience explains its own assumptions and evidence.

A material transformation

Inspect the grown oxide and deposited film on one identified silicon specimen, then its patterned cross-section at inspection. The original silicon surface provides a reference. Synthetic measurements and their uncertainty are compared with stated acceptance limits.

A bit in a memory system

Compose a teaching address through a bank, die and HBM stack. A closed bank, an open-row hit and a row conflict require different command sequences. Stack structure and working-set placement have separate, declared limits.

One operation, four organizations

Inspect one matrix product in scalar, vector, SIMT and systolic organizations. Partial sums and transfers expose how each teaching schedule executes the same arithmetic. These schedule steps do not rank measured hardware speed.

From a contract to hardware

Inspect an actual small FPGA adder artifact: its RTL, mapped logic, register states, placed resources and routes. The timing report is a tool estimate for that artifact. It does not establish measured board behavior or ASIC qualification.

Work that survives a restart

Follow a fixed workload through rack admission, readiness, execution and recovery. The timeline distinguishes executed work, currently retained whole steps and restart-durable checkpoints. Current, heat, coolant flow and energy use the same declared system boundary.

Test the application result

Evaluate a classifier on separate authored cases, including cases that break its training correlation. In a second example, inspect a deterministic retrieval pipeline: a correctly cited fact can still answer the wrong question. Hypothetical resource costs remain separate from measured accuracy on these examples.

Close the orbital budgets

Trace synthetic products through prescribed sunlight and eclipse, battery storage, radiator limits and ground contacts. Retained complete products include those already delivered; the onboard buffer holds the remainder. Passing these finite-horizon checks does not establish a flight-ready mission.

Breakthroughs and finite capacity

Inspect attention weights and the resulting weighted value. Compare assumed 3× compute growth with 2× memory-bandwidth growth every two years, starting from equal indices; this is a conditional scenario, not a fitted forecast. Read capacity evidence with its source date, physical boundary and operating status. Continue through the lesson links or the separate Ascent companion.
