"content": "Fabrication / Factory systems · Atlas v1.3.0\n\n# Wafer handling, carriers and genealogy\n\nMoves fragile material while retaining identity, orientation and process history.\n\n[Explore in Atlas](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/#wafer-handling-genealogy)Chamber, wafer carrier and fab floor; schematic routes\n\nLearning objectiveExplain why handling and traceability are coupled engineering interfaces.\n\n## The mechanism\n\nA wafer must reach the correct tool in the correct physical and recorded state. Carriers protect its surfaces during transport; load ports and robots transfer it into a local environment; alignment steps establish position and orientation. Meanwhile, identity links each wafer and die to its lot, tools, recipes and test results. Physical protection and information integrity reinforce one another: a clean but misidentified wafer can follow the wrong route, while a correctly identified wafer can still be damaged during handling. Advanced packaging adds film frames, thin dies and other carriers, so one handling geometry cannot represent every manufacturing stage.\n\n1. Associate the physical wafer with its identifier and authorized processing route.\n2. Select a carrier that supports the wafer thickness and exposed surface state.\n3. Transfer and align material while managing particles, moisture and mechanical contact.\n4. Update position and process events as lots split or dies are placed into assemblies.\n5. Join test and inspection observations through that genealogy to enable matched failure analysis.\n\n## Science and assumptions\n\n### Coordinate transformation\n\n$$\n\\mathbf r_{\\mathrm{package}}=R\\mathbf r_{\\mathrm{wafer}}+\\mathbf t\n$$\n\nA package-coordinate position is the documented rotation or reflection of its wafer-coordinate position plus the translation.\n\nSymbols and units\n\nr\\_package\n\nPosition in the package coordinate system\n\nmm vector\n\nr\\_wafer\n\nCorresponding position in wafer coordinates\n\nmm vector\n\nR\n\nDocumented rotation/reflection coordinate transform\n\ndimensionless matrix\n\nt\n\nTranslation into package coordinates\n\nmm vector\n\nr vectors and translation t use the same length unit; R represents the documented rotation/reflection convention.\n\nAssumptions A bookkeeping model. Actual die picking also needs calibration, local alignment and verified map-format conventions.\n\n## Engineering example\n\nIllustrative failure: a good-die map is interpreted after an unrecorded rotation. The database still contains correct measurements, but the picker visits the wrong physical sites; orientation validation detects the mismatch.\n\n## Distinctions and tradeoffs\n\nA tracking database cannot repair a broken link between a physical die and its recorded wafer-map coordinate.\n\nAutomation reduces repetitive handling variability but requires compatible carriers, interlocks and reliable identity transfer.\n\nGood-die maps must follow actual dies into multi-component packages so valuable tested parts are selected and later failures can be traced.\n\n## Specifications and interfaces\n\nTracked identity\n\nLot → wafer → die → package\n\nGenealogy must survive splitting, merging and assembly.\n\nHandling state\n\nCarrier, orientation and surface exposure\n\nRecorded independently from electrical test status.\n\n### Interfaces\n\nReleased material Input\n\nIdentifier, route authorization and compatible carrier\n\nNext tool or assembly stage Output\n\nCorrectly positioned material with continuous history\n\n## Check your understanding\n\n### Why must a wafer map preserve orientation during singulation and pick-and-place?\n\n1. To select the physical die corresponding to each recorded test result\n2. To increase transistor clock speed directly\n3. To eliminate every latent defect\n\nAnswer and reasoning\n\nTo select the physical die corresponding to each recorded test result\n\nA coordinate is meaningful only relative to a known origin and orientation; an incorrect transform can select a failed die.\n\n## Evidence and scope\n\nCarrier capacities, robotic tolerances and factory data formats vary. No proprietary AMHS or dispatch implementation is implied.\n\nUse the manufacturing investigation to trace compatible inputs, assembly and operating constraints; no current standalone calculator models this lesson’s full mechanism.\n\n## Sources\n\n- [Entegris — FOUP Services](https://www.entegris.com/en/home/our-science/by-service/foup-services.html)\n- [TSMC — Intelligent Packaging Fab](https://www.tsmc.com/english/dedicatedFoundry/services/apm_intelligent_packaging_fab)\n- [DISCO — Tech Briefing 2023](https://disco.co.jp/jp/ir/movie/doc/E_Tech_Briefing_2023.pdf)\n\n[Published lesson data](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/lesson-data/wafer-handling-genealogy-52b42e12e40c8f92.json) · [Atlas releases and licensing](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/licenses.html)\n\n## Continue exploring\n\n### Foundations\n\n- [Wafer finishing, orientation and geometry](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/wafer-finishing-geometry/)\n- [Contamination and the state of a surface](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/contamination-and-surface-state/)\n\n### Related lessons\n\n- [MES, dispatch and process release](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/manufacturing-execution-dispatch/)\n- [DFT, probe, binning and known-good die](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/known-good-die-test/)\n- [Temporary bonding, thinning and singulation](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/temporary-carrier-thinning/)"
