"content": "Frontier infrastructure · Atlas v1.3.0\n\n# Orbital computing evidence ladder\n\nSeparates onboard processing, flight demonstrations, laboratory tests and proposed services.\n\n[Explore in Atlas](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/#orbital-evidence-status)Spacecraft to proposed constellation; orbital geometry schematic\n\nLearning objectiveClassify orbital claims by evidence type and the capability actually tested.\n\n## The mechanism\n\nComputing in orbit spans different kinds of evidence. A payload can process its own sensor data, demonstrate an accelerator on a small mission or form part of a proposed distributed service. Starcloud reports an H100 flight and nanoGPT training demonstration, while Google’s Suncatcher study combines laboratory experiments and a proposed architecture. NASA’s TBIRD establishes an on-orbit communication result, not a compute-cluster result. Each supports a bounded statement. A scaled scenario must separately close energy, thermal, link, reliability and lifecycle budgets rather than treating one successful operation in orbit as proof of a continuously available commercial data center.\n\n1. Name the payload, task, date and physical test environment.\n2. Distinguish provider-reported outcomes from independently measured or published evidence.\n3. List which subsystem constraints the demonstration actually exercised.\n4. Keep proposed mission dates and constellation illustrations in planned or research states.\n5. Evaluate the next scale using separate physical and operational budgets.\n\n## Science and assumptions\n\n### Service readiness model\n\nOrbital compute service is ready for a specified workload and operating envelope only when compute, energy, thermal rejection, links, reliability and operations are all supported within that same envelope.\n\nEach term is a supported capability for the same workload and operating envelope.\n\nAssumptions A conceptual gate model, not a certification or a prediction of commercial viability.\n\n## Engineering example\n\nSynthetic evidence exercise: a ten-minute inference run verifies that workload on that payload for that interval. It does not establish one-year availability, a sustained ground-data path or fleet replacement cost.\n\n## Distinctions and tradeoffs\n\nWorks in orbit is not equivalent to qualified, economical, continuously available fleet-scale service.\n\nSmall missions test assumptions affordably, but scaling changes heat rejection, communication, replacement and fleet-level failure exposure.\n\nOnboard inference can reduce downlink demand for space-generated data; ground-user services have different ingress, latency and economic requirements.\n\n## Specifications and interfaces\n\nEvidence categories\n\nFlight, bench test, simulation, plan and scenario\n\nUse the category associated with the specific result.\n\nService boundary\n\nOne demonstrated task versus ongoing accepted work\n\nAvailability, failure recovery and access require additional evidence.\n\n### Interfaces\n\nProject result or proposal Input\n\nMeasured or reported task under dated conditions\n\nBounded conclusion Output\n\nWhat was demonstrated and what remains unresolved\n\n## Check your understanding\n\n### What does a ground optical bench test directly establish?\n\n1. A completed orbital network deployment\n2. A universal orbital computing cost\n3. Behavior of the tested ground link under its conditions\n\nAnswer and reasoning\n\nBehavior of the tested ground link under its conditions\n\nThe environment and system boundary constrain the conclusion; flight pointing, contact and reliability require additional evidence.\n\n## Evidence and scope\n\nStarcloud’s page has inconsistent Gemini/Gemma wording, so only its H100 and nanoGPT statements are used. No universal first-AI-in-space claim is made.\n\nBrowse the numerical library; no current calculator directly models this lesson’s central mechanism.\n\n## Sources\n\n- [Starcloud-1](https://www.starcloud.com/starcloud-1)\n- [Exploring a space-based, scalable AI infrastructure system design](https://research.google/blog/exploring-a-space-based-scalable-ai-infrastructure-system-design/)\n- [NASA’s Record-Breaking Laser Demo Completes Mission](https://www.nasa.gov/directorates/somd/space-communications-navigation-program/nasas-record-breaking-laser-demo-completes-mission/)\n\n[Published lesson data](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/lesson-data/orbital-evidence-status-20e856f3b48fbbbd.json) · [Atlas releases and licensing](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/licenses.html)\n\n## Continue exploring\n\n### Foundations\n\n- [Inference serving and request scheduling](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/serving/)\n- [Integrated accelerator rack: GB200 NVL72 example](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/rack/)\n\n### Related lessons\n\n- [Orbital solar generation and eclipse storage](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/orbital-solar-storage/)\n- [Orbital optical links and contact budgets](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/orbital-link-contacts/)\n- [Orbital lifecycle economics and workload fit](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/orbital-lifecycle-economics/)"
