# Optical transceivers and co-packaged optics

Changes where electrical signals become optical while retaining a complete link budget.

Learning objectiveExplain the physical tradeoffs of moving optical conversion closer to silicon.

## The mechanism

An optical link converts electrical data into modulated light, transports it through fiber and recovers an electrical signal at the destination. Pluggable transceivers put much of this conversion near a front-panel connector. Co-packaged optics moves optical engines closer to the switching silicon, shortening some high-speed electrical paths. The change can alter power, signal loss, thermal design, fiber attachment and serviceability. NVIDIA’s 2025 photonics announcement provides a named example. Optical networking is distinct from optical arithmetic: carrying tensor bytes with light does not mean the neural-network multiplication occurs in the optical link.

1. Locate the optical conversion relative to the switch or accelerator silicon.
2. Budget electrical loss before the optical engine and optical loss through the fiber path.
3. Account for laser supply, modulation, detection and any required signal processing.
4. Design thermal paths and fiber attachment for the selected package arrangement.
5. Evaluate full-link energy and field replacement behavior under the intended system conditions.

## Science and assumptions

### Simple optical margin

$$
\mathrm{Margin}_{dB}=P_{\mathrm{tx},dBm}-\mathrm{Loss}_{dB}-P_{\mathrm{required},dBm}
$$

Optical margin in decibels is transmit power in dBm minus path loss in dB minus required receive power in dBm.

These are logarithmic power quantities; do not insert linear watts into this subtraction.

Symbols and units

Margin\_dB

Remaining optical link budget

dB

P\_tx,dBm

Transmitted optical power relative to 1 mW

dBm

Loss\_dB

Total counted path attenuation

dB

P\_required,dBm

Receiver required input power at the stated criterion

dBm

Terms use logarithmic optical-power units; a positive result is remaining link margin.

Assumptions A bounded link-budget model; dispersion, noise, nonlinearities and transient effects may require additional analysis.

## Engineering example

Synthetic budget: 0 dBm launch, 6 dB path loss and a −10 dBm receiver requirement leave 4 dB margin. Extra connector loss consumes margin even if the advertised bit rate stays unchanged.

## Distinctions and tradeoffs

Co-packaged optics changes integration and communication; it is not proof of photonic AI computation or zero link energy.

Shorter electrical paths can help signaling efficiency, while tighter packaging makes thermal isolation, fiber assembly and replacement planning more consequential.

Large accelerator fabrics need many reliable links; link power and serviceability affect useful cluster uptime and infrastructure overhead.

## Check your understanding

### Which consideration becomes more closely tied to package design with CPO?

1. The number of model parameters per token
2. Fiber attachment and optical-engine thermal integration
3. The tokenizer’s vocabulary

Answer and reasoning

Fiber attachment and optical-engine thermal integration

Moving optical engines into the package couples their assembly and thermal environment to the switching silicon.

## Evidence and scope

No vendor promotional efficiency multiplier is used. The announcement establishes a design direction and date, not a universal measured CPO advantage.

Use the manufacturing investigation to trace compatible inputs, assembly and operating constraints; no current standalone calculator models this lesson’s full mechanism.
