"content": "Infrastructure · Atlas v1.3.0\n\n# Qualify the memory system and retain useful work\n\nSeparate component screening, integration qualification, commissioning and sustained service evidence.\n\n[Explore in Atlas](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/#memory-system-qualification)Component screen → package qualification → site commissioning → operational evidence\n\nLearning objectiveSeparate component screening, integration qualification, commissioning and sustained service evidence.\n\n## The mechanism\n\nA memory stack can pass its own tests while a system fails at a different boundary: incompatible interface options, insufficient margin under simultaneous traffic, thermal hot spots, firmware errors or an incomplete recovery path. Integration therefore checks the package, board, fabric and runtime together. Commissioning confirms that the installed site can deliver the required power, cooling, connectivity and operational controls. These gates have evidence and dates, not merely installed component counts. Once operating, corrected errors, retried reads, throttling, restarts and lost updates affect useful service and must be visible in the workload result.\n\n1. Verify component identity, test coverage, interface revision and allowed operating conditions.\n2. Exercise the package/board memory paths under representative traffic, power and thermal conditions, preserving configuration and observed failures.\n3. Validate error reporting, firmware/runtime responses and data correctness; distinguish corrected errors from silent corruption.\n4. Commission facility and rack services with recovery/failure-path checks appropriate to the deployment.\n5. Measure accepted work over time, including interruptions, retries, recovery and checkpoint loss, then feed that evidence into the next design decision.\n\n## Science and assumptions\n\n### Retained work accounting\n\n$$\nW_{\\mathrm{retained}}=W_{\\mathrm{executed}}-W_{\\mathrm{discarded}}\n$$\n\nWretained = Wexecuted − Wdiscarded\n\nSymbols and units\n\nWretained\n\nCorrect work retained after validation and recovery\n\nwork units\n\nWexecuted\n\nWork executed in the measured interval\n\nwork units\n\nWdiscarded\n\nExecuted work not retained as valid output\n\nwork units\n\nBoth terms use the same useful-work definition. Discarded work includes invalid results and computations that must be repeated after loss.\n\nAssumptions Retries are not counted twice as retained output; accepted quality and service constraints must be specified.\n\n## Engineering example\n\nSynthetic interval: 1,000 updates execute, but 40 must be discarded after the last valid durable checkpoint. Retained progress is 960 updates, before later reruns. A busy GPU during the discarded work still consumed energy.\n\n## Distinctions and tradeoffs\n\nComponent specifications define intended behavior; the integrated platform and site still need their own verification.\n\nTesting and redundancy add cost and time while improving confidence and service continuity; no finite test proves the absence of every future fault.\n\nThe deployed thinking machine depends on retained correct results, not merely functional arithmetic units or announced memory capacity.\n\n## Specifications and interfaces\n\nFour separate gates\n\nScreen • qualify • commission • operate\n\nPassing one does not supply evidence for all the others.\n\nEvidence bundle\n\nConfiguration, method, population and date\n\nA source announcement cannot replace integration measurements.\n\n### Interfaces\n\nIntegrated memory system Input\n\nQualified components, firmware, runtime and site services\n\nMeasured deployment evidence Output\n\nCorrectness, recovery, sustained work and remaining limits\n\n## Check your understanding\n\n### A new memory component has a published specification. What establishes system readiness?\n\n1. Configuration-specific integration and commissioning evidence\n2. The specification alone\n3. A high advertised read-bandwidth grade\n\nAnswer and reasoning\n\nConfiguration-specific integration and commissioning evidence\n\nComponent specifications define intended behavior; the integrated platform and site still need their own verification.\n\n## Evidence and scope\n\nQualification criteria depend on the actual product and deployment; the atlas gives an evidence sequence, not vendor-approved limits. Proposed HBF systems remain proposed until corresponding integration and operational evidence exists.\n\nCompare checkpoint overhead, interruptions and retained progress; storage transfer behavior and full system qualification remain separate tests.\n\n## Sources\n\n- [NVIDIA — DGX GB rack hardware guide](https://docs.nvidia.com/dgx/dgxgb200-user-guide/hardware.html)\n- [UCIe — introduction Q&A recap](https://www.uciexpress.org/post/introduction-to-ucie-webinar-q-a-recap)\n- [Sandisk — release of first OCP HBF specification](https://investor.sandisk.com/node/8126/pdf)\n- [Semi AI Foundry — Communication Theory of Computation Realization](https://semiaifoundry.com/updates/communication-theory-of-computation-realization/)\n\n[Published lesson data](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/lesson-data/memory-system-qualification-575943caf971f760.json) · [Atlas releases and licensing](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/licenses.html)\n\n## Continue exploring\n\n### Foundations\n\n- [From memory placement to network, power and cooling](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/memory-to-hall-propagation/)\n- [HBM heat, assembly yield and test access](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/hbm-stack-thermal-yield/)\n- [Commissioning a usable AI cluster](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/cluster-commissioning-gates/)\n\n### Related lessons\n\n- [Checkpointing, failure and retained useful work](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/checkpoint-retained-work/)\n- [Verification closes the realization loop](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/crg-verification-loop/)\n- [HBF: a read-oriented tier and its evidence boundary](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/hbf-read-tier-contract/)\n- [Underfill, warpage, thermal paths and qualification](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/package-thermomechanical-reliability/)"
