"content": "· Atlas v1.3.0\n\n# Verification closes the realization loop\n\nConnects simulation, formal checks, silicon measurement, system qualification and workload evaluation.\n\n[Explore in Atlas](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/#crg-verification-loop)Design evidence → operating evidence\n\nLearning objectiveDesign a scoped verification loop that connects a prediction to an observation and a corrective action.\n\n## The mechanism\n\nA realization graph becomes engineering practice when every edge has a check. Functional simulation and formal methods test logical behavior; timing, power and physical signoff test implementation models; wafer probe, package test and system commissioning test manufactured behavior; workload evaluation tests useful output. These checks have different scopes and failure modes. The loop is intentionally iterative: a measured thermal bottleneck can change placement, package choice, runtime scheduling or even the model’s numerical strategy. The atlas uses this loop to distinguish a plausible design story from an accepted physical system.\n\n1. Declare the behavior, metric, unit and acceptance boundary.\n2. Run the least expensive check that can falsify the current assumption.\n3. Move to silicon, package, system and workload measurements as uncertainty narrows.\n4. Track failures to the graph edge and update the affected representation or budget.\n5. Record the qualified scope so evidence is not generalized beyond its task.\n\n## Science and assumptions\n\n### Observed margin\n\n$$\nm=x_{\\mathrm{observed}}-x_{\\mathrm{required}}\n$$\n\nFor a minimum requirement, margin is observed value minus the required value; a negative margin fails that minimum.\n\nThis subtraction convention applies to lower-bound requirements such as minimum throughput. For an upper limit such as maximum temperature, positive headroom instead uses limit minus observed. The original generic failure statement needs this direction qualification.\n\nSymbols and units\n\nm\n\nMargin above a minimum required value\n\nsame units as the selected metric\n\nx\\_observed\n\nObserved metric at the declared configuration and time\n\ndeclared metric units\n\nx\\_required\n\nMinimum acceptable value in the same metric and units\n\nsame metric units\n\nA margin is meaningful only when $x_{\\mathrm{observed}}$ and $x_{\\mathrm{required}}$ share a metric, unit, configuration and time boundary. A negative margin identifies a failed declared condition.\n\nAssumptions The scalar margin is a teaching abstraction; multi-dimensional timing, thermal and quality constraints need vector or worst-case treatment.\n\n## Engineering example\n\nIf a package thermal measurement is 82 °C against an 85 °C limit, the margin is +3 °C for that configuration and workload; it is not a fleet-wide guarantee or a model-quality score.\n\n## Distinctions and tradeoffs\n\nPassing a benchmark or simulation at one boundary does not qualify every physical or cognitive boundary of the system.\n\nMore validation reduces uncertainty but adds time, test structures, instrumentation and cost; the boundary should match consequence.\n\nA model’s capability is only meaningful when computation is correct, capacity is available, failures are recoverable and outcomes meet the declared evaluation task.\n\n## Specifications and interfaces\n\nEvidence ladder\n\nSimulation → signoff → silicon → system → workload\n\nEach rung narrows uncertainty at a different boundary.\n\nFeedback\n\nCorrection, redesign or bounded deployment\n\nA failed check is information, not an automatic AGI conclusion.\n\n### Interfaces\n\nPredicted behavior Input\n\nModels, simulation traces and signoff results\n\nObserved behavior Output\n\nMeasured margins, errors, useful work and corrections\n\n## Check your understanding\n\n### What is the purpose of the verification loop?\n\n1. To turn an animation into a measurement\n2. To connect predictions and observations across design, manufacturing, system and workload boundaries\n3. To eliminate the need for engineering judgment\n\nAnswer and reasoning\n\nTo connect predictions and observations across design, manufacturing, system and workload boundaries\n\nDifferent checks expose different failure modes; the loop preserves scope and feeds corrections back into design.\n\n## Evidence and scope\n\nThe loop is a systems-engineering teaching pattern. Provider-specific goodput sources illustrate one recovery mechanism, not a universal reliability law.\n\nUse the manufacturing investigation to trace compatible inputs, assembly and operating constraints; no current standalone calculator models this lesson’s full mechanism.\n\n## Sources\n\n- [Semi AI Foundry — Communication Theory of Computation Realization](https://semiaifoundry.com/updates/communication-theory-of-computation-realization/)\n- [Google — Elastic training and goodput](https://cloud.google.com/blog/products/ai-machine-learning/elastic-training-and-optimized-checkpointing-improve-ml-goodput)\n\n[Published lesson data](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/lesson-data/crg-verification-loop-8eb2a4a503ff390d.json) · [Atlas releases and licensing](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/licenses.html)\n\n## Continue exploring\n\n### Foundations\n\n- [Package and system preserve the contract](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/crg-package-system-closure/)\n- [Evaluation & the AGI frontier](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/evaluation/)\n\n### Related lessons\n\n- [The 55-year realization challenge and CRG](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/crg-55-year-resolution/)\n- [DFT, probe, binning and known-good die](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/known-good-die-test/)\n- [Distributed checkpoint and recovery state](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/checkpoint/)\n- [GPT-6 Astra](https://semiaifoundry.com/learn/atlas/astra/)"
