# Contamination and the state of a surface

Tracks particles, unwanted chemistry and surface changes across process boundaries.

[Explore in Atlas](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/#contamination-and-surface-state)Atomic lattice to full wafer; geometry schematic

Learning objectiveSelect contamination evidence that matches the vulnerable process interface.

## The mechanism

Contamination is not one kind of dirt. A particle can block a pattern or keep two bonding surfaces apart; a dissolved metal can alter electrical behavior; airborne molecules can react with a resist or exposed surface. A cleanroom filter that captures particles therefore does not establish molecular cleanliness. Surface state also changes during storage: adsorption, oxidation and residues can matter even when a wafer remains inside a carrier. This lesson treats cleaning, materials purity, carrier history and queue time as connected controls. The right inspection is selected from the suspected mechanism, rather than interpreting every defect as evidence of the same contamination source.

1. Name the vulnerable surface and the next operation that depends on it.
2. List plausible particle and chemical exposure paths, including storage and transport.
3. Choose an analytical method that can distinguish the relevant species or defect class.
4. Compare matched wafers with recorded process stage and exposure history.
5. Verify removal and possible film damage after cleaning instead of inferring success from a particle count alone.

## Science and assumptions

### Exposure bookkeeping

$$
D=\int_{t_0}^{t_1}c(t)\,\mathrm dt
$$

Ambient exposure is concentration integrated over the stated time interval.

Choose a concentration unit such as particles/m³ or a mole fraction before assigning a numerical exposure. Adsorbed surface dose is a different quantity.

Symbols and units

D

Time-integrated ambient exposure, not adsorbed surface dose

concentration unit × s

c(t)

Ambient concentration of the selected contaminant

declared concentration unit

t

Elapsed time

s

t₀,t₁

Start and end of the exposure interval

s

c(t) is an ambient concentration and D concentration×time, using explicitly stated units.

Assumptions Exposure is not deposited surface dose. Adsorption, flow, reactions and desorption require additional models and measurements.

## Engineering example

Illustrative experiment: compare freshly prepared and deliberately delayed witness wafers from the same lot. Measure surface chemistry and bonding response separately; a time correlation alone does not prove a particular contaminant caused failure.

## Distinctions and tradeoffs

A low airborne particle count is not a measurement of molecular contamination or wafer-surface chemistry.

More aggressive cleaning may remove a contaminant while damaging exposed films or changing the surface needed for bonding.

A small surface defect can disable a device or a dense bond array after many valuable fabrication steps have already occurred.

## Specifications and interfaces

Contamination classes

Particles; metals; ions; organics; molecules

Categories require different collection and detection methods.

Measurement basis

Per area, volume or exposure time

Do not compare counts/cm² with dissolved concentration without a transport model.

### Interfaces

Process and carrier history Input

Potential exposure pathways and residues

Prepared surface Output

Measured state suitable for the next operation

## Check your understanding

### A particle monitor is unchanged but a bonding interface degrades after storage. What is a useful next check?

1. Measure the relevant surface chemistry and storage exposure
2. Assume particles are the only possible cause
3. Raise every cleaning intensity without measurement

Answer and reasoning

Measure the relevant surface chemistry and storage exposure

The observation leaves chemistry, moisture and other mechanisms unresolved; a matched surface analysis can discriminate them.

## Evidence and scope

All exposure experiments are teaching designs, not authorization to alter production handling. No contamination threshold is asserted.

Use the manufacturing investigation to trace compatible inputs, assembly and operating constraints; no current standalone calculator models this lesson’s full mechanism.
