"content": "Execution software · Atlas v1.3.0\n\n# Compiler, intermediate code, and device executable\n\nTransforms program descriptions into executable instructions and runtime-compatible artifacts.\n\n[Explore in Atlas](https://semiaifoundry.com/ai-atlas/#compiler)Software transformation graph; no physical size\n\nLearning objectiveExplain why graph lowering changes movement and launch overhead.\n\n## The mechanism\n\nCompilation bridges the form humans or frameworks express and the instructions hardware executes. In the CUDA toolchain, the compiler driver separates host and device portions, invokes the appropriate compilation stages, and packages device code for use by the host application. Intermediate representations support transformations before final device-specific code is produced, and some paths use runtime compilation. The atlas shows a graph passing through lowering and code-generation stages, with the final launch connected to GPU execution. Optimizations can combine or reorganize operations, but they must preserve the permitted program semantics. A faster compiler path does not change the trained model's intent; it changes how the same required work is mapped to available machinery.\n\n1. Analyze the program and its target requirements.\n2. Lower and optimize host and device work through the toolchain.\n3. Package or generate executable device code for runtime launch.\n\n## Science and assumptions\n\n### Sequential execution-time decomposition\n\n$$\nT\\approx\\sum_i t_{\\mathrm{launch},i}+\\sum_j t_{\\mathrm{kernel},j}+\\sum_k t_{\\mathrm{transfer},k}\n$$\n\nA sequential baseline sums launch times, kernel times and transfer times without overlap.\n\nSymbols and units\n\nT\n\nSequential baseline execution time\n\ns\n\nt\\_launch,i\n\nExposed time of launch i\n\ns\n\nt\\_kernel,j\n\nExecution time of kernel j\n\ns\n\nt\\_transfer,k\n\nExposed time of transfer k\n\ns\n\ni,j,k\n\nEvents in the respective nonoverlapping baseline sums\n\ninteger indices\n\nCompilation and fusion can change the number of launches, intermediate materializations, and execution kernels. This decomposition helps explain a speedup without assuming that fewer kernels always win.\n\nAssumptions Illustrative sequential baseline without overlap; fused kernels may change register pressure, occupancy, numerical behavior, and actual execution costs.\n\n## Engineering example\n\nA fused operation can remove an intermediate store, but register or shared-memory pressure may reduce occupancy; the tradeoff is workload-specific.\n\n## Distinctions and tradeoffs\n\nA compiler does not discover model weights by itself; training and program translation are different processes.\n\nSpecialization can improve execution efficiency. Compilation overhead and target dependence complicate deployment.\n\nCompilers map high-level tensor work onto device instructions. Their choices influence memory traffic, launch overhead, and hardware use.\n\n## Specifications and interfaces\n\nCUDA tool example\n\nNVCC compiler driver\n\nCoordinates host and device compilation stages.\n\nRepresentations\n\nSource → intermediate → target code\n\nExact stages depend on the toolchain and options.\n\nCorrectness boundary\n\nProgram semantics\n\nOptimizations must respect specified numerical and execution behavior.\n\n### Interfaces\n\nSource or generated program Input\n\nOperations and target constraints\n\nExecutable artifact Output\n\nDevice code and host integration\n\n## Check your understanding\n\n### What is the compiler’s central job in this layer?\n\n1.
